Roof Material for Dampening Sound

Nobody likes to hear what can only be described by birds doing tap dancing at 4am. This is why it is crucial to consider noise when choosing materials for your roof. What about concrete roofing? Or metal roofing? Is there anything you can do to your roof if it is already installed?

Insulating your attic is the best way to dampen sound. Insulating your attic space is a good option if you have the space. These are the noise levels associated with each roof. However, most roofs can be properly insulated to reduce unwanted noise.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are the best roof to reduce noise. Asphalt is cost-effective and absorbs sound well. The asphalt's dense qualities prevent sound from entering the asphalt shingles. They have tabs with overlapping edges that protect sound.

Metal roofing

Although metal may sound loudest, if it is properly installed over a solid roof deck, it can help reflect noise away from your house. Metal roofs can be durable because of the air pocket between the sheathing and the metal roof.

Tile roofing

Clay and tile are very quiet materials if you think about them. The same is true for roofing. Concrete, clay, and tile all produce very little or no sound. Concrete is an excellent choice for those who are concerned about noise and echoes.

There are many other ways to reduce noise if you cannot change the roofing material. You can make your living space quieter by making sure all components are sealed properly. Wind turbines can be very noisy so you might consider switching to a Power Attic Vent (PAV). PAV's don't make a lot of noise, but they can circulate air and lower attic temperatures. Two types of waterproof roofing materials, vapor barrier or die-coating, can also be used to soundproof your roof.

No matter what your roofing material is, we can provide a free estimate and talk about insulation. We even offer R 60 insulation!
